I started in 2004 as a field technician in Laurel, Mississippi, fixing networks on site for Howard Computers. From there I moved into network engineering, then solutions engineering and pre-sales design, then managing a team of engineers, and only then into sales full time.
That order matters. By the time I carried a quota, I had already installed, configured, and troubleshot most of what I now sell, so the sales conversation tends to start with the design and the constraints, not the brochure.
Today I am a Major Account Manager at Fortinet, responsible for large public sector accounts. I work with state agencies, local government, and higher education across Arkansas on secure networking and cybersecurity, and my favorite hour of any week is still the one at a whiteboard, mapping how a network actually runs versus how it was supposed to.
The through line is simple: listen properly, design honestly, and never sell anybody a box that will not solve their problem.
